My vises are made by Panavise, a U.S. Company.  The one with the wide jaws is the model 350.  The smaller one is the model 301. Both have the 312 Base mount – www.panavise.com

  1. I just bought some Kwikset locks (discounted because it was without keys) for practice, thinking it would be a laugh and instant open, but I had a heck of a time picking them. The main problem I had, was that it appeared I was getting a "false set" and "counter rotation", but I knew Kwikset doesn't use security pins. I kept re-picking it and finally gutted one and saw the key pins and felt rotten when all the key pins were standard keypins. I was about to be depressed, when I decided to check the Driver Pins, just for the heck of it and sure enough, 2 of them were spools! Wow, apparently people knew about this a year or two ago, but it was new to me. Once I looked at the pins and knew which were spools, I could open the lock in about 45 seconds minimum or up to almost 3 minutes when my hands began to cramp and stress from repeated re-picking without rest. I'll tell you this, when you are 100% confident a lock doesn't have ANY security pins and refuse to try to pick it as if it DID have security pins, you are in for a lot of frustration. Also, the packaging had absolutely NO MENTION ANYWHERE about ANY security features, which was odd. If this lock had been a brand I had never heard of, I would have assumed the possibility of any sort of security pins and it would have been much easier to open. Every time I got a false set or counter rotation I thought there was a problem with the lock or that I was just stupid and it wasn't a false set at all, it was just sloppy tolerances, so I tried to force the lock to turn the rest of the way with a random KW1 key and it just made me really confused. It just goes to show you, beliefs about what is in a lock, can really screw with your ability if you are wrong.

  2. Hey bill, my boss knows I'm into lockpicking and wants me to re-pin a disc cam lock on a filing cabinet, that he lost the key to, to match another key so he can lock it again. can you recommend a bargain universal pining kit? And maybe I can also pin a few locks for you while I'm at it ;)

  3. The control sheer is tensioned with the leather, should figure out how to chuck up the lock without touching the lug on the side. Ill bet you could have raked it open without a tension wrench.

  4. Holy crap! I can't believe how fast you nailed that. As soon as I Saw it pop, I knew what happened. I used to open my doors a lot with a control key and the best lock turner. More than one way to skin a cat…… Seven turned into one the easy way….. ;-)
