My vises are made by Panavise, a U.S. Company.  The one with the wide jaws is the model 350.  The smaller one is the model 301. Both have the 312 Base mount – www.panavise.com

  1. “All” combination locks is a pretty bold statement. That would include Sargent & Greenleaf, which is a horse of a different color. Some of your readers don’t get exposed to the better locks out there.

  2. It is amazing how many people think that combination locks are any kind of security at all. A blind person can pick one.

  3. I pick bad locks recreationally, and even I have never failed to get into a combination lock.

are there combination locks that don't give you feedback when you pull the shackle?

  4. That's the problem with combos. Because there's no mechanical method of turning or moving a part once the combination is set, it's hard to make a lock that can't be shimmed. Balls need a separate movement on an actuator or similar to release them.

Imagine a non-shimmable ball in the locking mechanism – it wouldn't move out the way even if the combo is correct as the only force available to move it is equivalent to a shim anyway. It'd just bind up.

  5. Is there any system in place, something along the lines of lockpicking secret santa year-round, where you can send a lock forward and receive a new one to play with, then send that one forward again etc?

  6. When I was at school I used to open the combination locks on peoples bikes and swap them about, I know it was a cruel thing to do now but when I was young I used to enjoy the mayhem at going home time. The point of my comment is, even as a child i worked out that with a bit of tension on the lock I could feel the gates and open the lock in a couple of minutes. Even though I knew nothing about locks.
