FarmerFreak

Farmer Freak’s “LOL” design that I’m convinced stands for “Lots of Luck”.  I was very lucky to get this lock open, and it took many, many hours of late-night struggling.  It gave a lot of feedback in terms of clicking, leading you to believe the pin was set, but it just refused to open up.

When it finally DID pop open and I gutted it, the amount of precision machine work to an innocent looking core was amazing.  Farmer Freak had milled out the core and fabricated a SECOND shear line!

If that wasn’t bad enough, he installed a complete set of “drunken spools” as drivers.  In a drunken spool configuration two “T” pins face each other and flop around in the shear line.  The feedback feels like a spool, but quickly jams the shear line when you push it to the break between the pins.

Notice that the wafers above the key pins are different lengths.  Since this lock has only ONE true shear line, the various depths make it very easy to pick one of the pins to the wrong shear line, meaning the lock will not open.  To get it open, all six pins have to be picked to the exact shear line shown at the top of the plate.  If even one pin is not picked to the correct height, it will not open.  The chance of hitting the correct combination of the possible shear lines is less than 2%.

FarmerFreak is well known in the lock picking community for being an innovator and producer of finely machined, difficult to pick challenge locks. This is a perfect example of his work.

FF was also the first to come up with the idea of “drunken spools”, which is actually two T-pins facing each other. They are NASTY to pick as they first behave like a spool, then when the first is past the shear line, a T-pin. True alien technology!

If the drunken spools weren’t bad enough, FarmerFreak threw in a home made multiple shear line plate. This plate GREATLY reduces your chance of hitting the right shear line, especially since he multi-shear lined EVERY cylinder. To get an open you must hit the RIGHT shear line on EVERY cylinder. One wrong one and your are totally hosed and have to begin again. Evil.

One photo shows the multi-shearline plate in place and key in place, showing the correct alignment for an open.
