(1248) Mark’s Challenge (& GIVEAWAY)

LockLab is Fan funded!  Help pay for stuff to review, break and talk trash about, and maybe even give away when we’re done.  Join the Tribe!

My vises are made by Panavise, a U.S. Company.  The one with the wide jaws is the model 350.  The smaller one is the model 301. Both have the 312 Base mount – www.panavise.com

  1. By watching your you tube videos. After 15 years working with locking mechanisms. You teach me more every day to help sharpen my skills. Thank you.

  2. I have seen many plugs filed. Very seldom is it done well. When I started locksmithing there were still guys (claiming to be locksmiths) out there that did not own a pin tray, they were and are still hacks. That is not to include those not in the profession. I understand this is a hobby for you and would not expect you to sink a bunch of capital into it. Filing a plug for a working lock is never a good plan! It is a miracle that master wafer didn’t wedge into the shear line and sieze the whole cylinder up.

  3. I agree filling is to fit the pins. Those t pins may have never trapped because the stack or pins wouldn’t have fit in the plug.

  4. Nice video! Thank you your videos I was inspired to upgrade my “Master” lock. Replaced it with an Abus 90/50 Titalium, Shielded Shackle, and a Schlage keyway. I repinned myself to my house key so now its more secure and more conveinient!

  5. When making keys for custom locks I have on occasion filed one bit down too far then just filed the plug to make the sheer line work so it doesnt get hung up on the driver pin 😅😝

  6. I still don't agree with the filing part on the lock, but we had a healthy discussion about it last time.

I think he went a bit overboard on what he was trying to trap you with and that actually made it easier.

  7. I've never been a fan of adding wafers or extra pins. They pin or not it just makes picking the lock easier.

I always assumed the filing was to correct pin height.
